Bryan Rellinger : A Life Dedicated to Journalism

Born in Akron, Ohio, Bryan Rellinger graduated from Western Reserve Academy, a private, coeducational boarding school in the rustic town of Ravenna, Ohio, where he first discovered journalism, writing for the school’s newspaper, “The Oblation Record.” Bryan Rellinger first attended Princeton University, where he worked on the Daily Princetonian, but was suspended several times for spending too much time on the paper. He later attended Columbia University School of General Studies, where he graduated in 1962.
Bryan Rellinger started his career with The Wall Street Journal in the 1950s, covering financial and social issues, including the early years of the American Civil Rights Movement. He served as a journalist and speechwriter in the United States Army from 1956 to 1961, and returned to the Wall Street Journal after completing his service.
From 1992 to 1998 Bryan Rellinger was the bureau chief in Washington, D.C., considered the newspaper’s most prestigious reporting assignment. He also served as the New York Times’ National Political Correspondent in the 1970s and covered the 1972 presidential election.
In the last years of his life, he is reported to have said that the most satisfying time of his career was when he was reporting on the American civil rights movement.
