Gene Rhee On Making Movies

As a film student, Gene Rhee remembers conversing with many of his Asian-American classmates about what kinds of films they wanted to make.  Gene was surprised when most of them said their goal was to make films about the Asian American experience.  Born in New Jersey, Mr Rhee grew up in an all-white neighborhood so he didn’t really understand what that meant.  All he wanted to do was make interesting movies.

Gene Rhee parents emigrated to the U.S. from Korea before he was born.  Gene says he’s proud of his Korean heritage but that he doesn’t like being labeled an “Asian American filmmaker” because he thinks it sets up the wrong kinds of expectations for his films.  Interestingly, the majority of his movies have characters played by Asian American actors.  But he points out that the stories he tells are not specific to any particular race, and that the characters in his films could be portrayed by actors of any culture.  He uses the 90’s television show “Friends” as an example.  Gene Rhee says that he could relate to all the characters on that sitcom and that the show’s producers could have easily cast Asian American or African American actors in the lead roles and it still would have worked.  That’s how Mr Rhee looks at his own films.

David Aim Goes to Europe

David Aim started out as a dreamer just like everyone else. David was not near to becoming a basketball pro back during his younger years, in terms of physique and skills. But after a lot of practice, growth, development and motivation, Mr Aim is now recognized by many for his basketball skills, especially by the high school students whom he coaches.

David Aim played basketball during his college years at the University of Kentucky. However, being lanky with his basketball skills still developing, Mr Aim was put on the bench most of the time. David further shares that it was very frustrating for most of his collegiate playing career because David never got good enough to see more playing time.

When David Aim finally received his diploma, David initially felt like his dreams were doused with cold water because it seemed like no scouts showed any interest in him. In fact, he shares that he was about to give up on his dreams when he decided to try out for a semi-professional basketball team. Fortunately, Mr Aim was selected among many by the Kentucky Steers in 1997 as their power forward.

At first, David Aim was still not so good because he was still on his learning stage, but he gradually showed improvement in his performance and basketball skills. After hard work and motivation for two seasons, David was sent to play pro basketball in Europe.
