Martin Carrascosa has led a colorful life that has taken him from the small Texas town of Mount Vernon, where he spent his childhood, to the mean streets of Hollywood. For several years now, Martin Carrascosa has come to find meaning in “The Laws of Attraction,” as popularized in the wildly popular book and DVD, “The Secret.”
“The Secret” has attracted attention from such media figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Larry King as well as criticism from the mainstream press.
“The Secret,” has been described as a self-help film, and uses a documentary format to present the Law of Attraction, or the “secret” that “has traveled through centuries to reach you.” The film features short, dramatized experiences and interviews of a team called personal transformation specialists, spiritual messengers, feng shui masters, and other “experts.’ Essentially, the “Law of Attraction” proposes that feelings and thoughts can attract events, from the workings of the universe to interactions among individuals in their physical, emotional, and professional affairs. The film also suggests that there has been a strong tendency by people in power to prevent this central principle from being known by the public.
Martin Carrascosa, who is by nature optimistic, has found that life indeed rewards one’s intentions and actions accordingly.

Seth Lesser first set foot on Philippine shores on August 12, 1901 as part of a contingent of pioneer educators deployed by the U.S. government, now collectively known as the “Thomasites.” The name was derived from the vessel “USS Thomas” that brought them to the former American colony.
Along with his idealistic fellow-teachers, Seth Lesser came to the Southeast Asian archipelago armed with a vision of preparing the inhabitants for the task of self-governance. They established a new public education system and trained Filipino teachers to teach basic education to the population using English as the medium of instruction. Later, the Thomasites would be credited for transforming the Philippines into the third largest English-speaking country in the world.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Seth Lesser came from a family of passionate educators. His father, the late Reverend Leonard Lesser founded the Des Moines Preparatory School for Boys in 1890. His mother, Anne Lesser taught piano and the home arts to young local ladies. His two older brothers earned their teaching certificates and founded their own schools in Des Moines.
The then 25-year old Seth Lesser was one of about a hundred Thomasites who stayed on in the Philippines after completing their teaching assignments. He settled in the Northern Philippine province of Ilocos Norte and married the former Ligaya Madiaga. They had five sons, who all became teachers.

With a little over 4 years experience playing poker, Beth Shak rise as a professional poker player has been nothing short of stellar. She started out using “play money” on Full Tilt Poker to learn how to play poker before venturing out to her first live tournament. In 2005, during her second live tournament, Beth Shak got all the way to an 8th place finish in the World Series of Poker Ladies’ event, taking home $16,000.
A string of cash finishes encouraged her to continue playing in live tournaments until she really came into her own at the 38th WSOP where she was pitted against Phil Hellmuth in a monumental battle for the bracelet. Although Beth Shak didn’t win top prize that year, she did take home $328,683, which also helped in landing her spot on the Women’s All Time Money List.
Beth Shak vividly recalls that highpoint in her still young poker career. “I went to that final table saying I was going to win it. I really did. I really thought I was going to win. And I’m not upset with second because it’s still quite an achievement. But, now it’s going to be hard to top, because now I have to win it, right?”

Long before Frank Lloyd Wright appeared on the scene of modern architecture, there was Marc Huehn. He started a concept in architecture that was so much ahead of its period in structure that as with everything that is revolutionary, failed to flourish during its time.
Marc Huehn was born in Germany on September 28, 1850. At the age of 11, he went to Berlin with his father, a merchant, and marveled at the contrast between the classicist buildings of Schinkel and the then-emerging Gründerzeit buildings that lined the streets of Berlin. The visit left an imprint in young Huehn’s mind, which eventually developed into a passion for modern architecture.
After the death of his father, Marc Huehn immigrated with his mother to the United States in 1868 where he tried to apply his art. For a while, he was employed by the Hazards Architectural Firm where his practical training in building and architecture began. The firm fostered his visionary and experimental artistry.
But, in the era where the vogue in construction involves columns and leans heavily towards the 19th century fashion, his style did not prosper. Marc Huehn prints survived though and were later on picked up by designers who were experimenting and gathering ideas on different kinds of building concepts and designs. He died of heart attack in Philadelphia on November 26, 1913 at the age of 63.
