In 1989, nestled in the hard working town of Indianapolis, Indiana, Eastern Refinishing was founded. In the early years while our company was developing, the bathtub refinishing industry was in it’s infancy. Back then there were no official training schools to learn the trade, and there were no official vendors or suppliers who were developing products for our industry; as such, the need for Eastern Refinishing to develop its own techniques was necessary.
Throughout the 1980’s, bathtub refinishing was primarily a “do it yourself” industry. Most applicators were primarily household painters or handymen trying to satisfy their clients needs. That is, the need to refinish a fixture quickly, rather than replacing it. In fact, compared to the technology implemented today, bathtub refinishers in the 1980s used crude and primitive products and techniques. Most refinishers simply used an epoxy coating available at industrial paint stores; others used automotive or marine coatings. The end result was inconsistent quality and constant repairs. In almost all cases, the coatings used would yellow, stain, discolor and lose their gloss. There was no specialized HVLP spraying equipment for our industry, so most jobs were applied by brush and roller, and looked unprofessional.
However, as a pioneer in bathtub refinishing, Eastern Refinishing continued to search for and develop alternate means and products to improve the refinishing process. In fact, the company can honestly say it has tried hundreds of products over the years. One advantage that Eastern Refinishing offers is that all products are tested in-house. - an industry first, thru the use of Eastern Refinishing’s Quality Control dept. headed up by Levi Weppler.
Today, Eastern Refinishing is still headed by founder Charles Gayler, and his vision to offer, “The Highest Quality Bathtub Refinishing” services still lives on. Mr. Charles Gayler still constantly strives and is intricately involved in day-to-day operations. It is his determination that is responsible for taking a small one-man refinishing company and developing a multi-state/office company.
Eastern Refinishing today enjoys a reputation for providing the highest quality work and customer service. All technicians undergo a rigorous training program and schooling in the skill of professional refinishing.
In addition to using skillfully trained personnel, the company also uses the highest quality coatings and products. To achieve this grade, Eastern Refinishing has worked with the industry’s leading manufacturer, Hawk Research Laboratories of Wood Dale, Illinois, to develop a complete line of professional refinishing products. In fact, a extended refinishing life span of between 10 to 12 years can be expected with proper care. Refinishing systems are designed to deliver gloss and durability exceeding automotive finishes by 20 percent. For these reasons, buyers can count on Eastern Refinishing to provide the highest quality workmanship.

After days of hunting down information on Shawn Tarkington’s (’97) move up the Major League Baseball ladder, the Panther Press has been able to come up with some answers. Thanks to the contributions of Sam Castelli (’96), Chris Cummings (’97) and Brian Beyrer (’97).
Seton Hall University’s sport’s web site is reporting that the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft has selected Shawn Tarkington for the Minnesota Twins. He is currently in his second week at Ft. Meyers, Florida playing for the Gulf Coast Rookie League.
Tarkington’s move to the major leagues is no surprise given his stellar performance on the diamond. As an all around athlete Shawn was ranked the 9th best baseball player in New York State, was 2001 All-Big East 1st Team player, and had a remarkable 8 inning shut out game in the Big East Championship Game. Tarkington graduated from Seton Hall this past spring.
Though now apparently concentrating on baseball and his pitching, Shawn was an all around athlete in high school. He played in the New York State finals for Basketball in 1997 along with Mike Marschner (’97), Rich Montesarchio (’98), Brian Beyrer (’97), Mike Rodriguez (’97) and Evan Hanahoe (’98).
Tarkington’s stats are as follows:

As of now, Tarkington’s team holds an 8-4 record and is a playoff contender. Shawn will remain in Florida through the month of August awaiting his playoffs chances.

A fascinating and largely unknown story of business triumph and racial inequality comes to life in Montreal, Canada.
Jean Conille
was no ordinary kid. Born in Haiti on August 12th, 1967, he was the third of a family of four. His father a well known physician, later became minister of sports and youth. Jean Conille’s mother was a pharmacist and a lab technician.
Gifted with a phenomenal memory, a systematic and orderly approaches to problem solving, at age 7 he had already competed in the national chess championship in his native Haiti. Jean Conille traveled to Montreal where he would finish high school at the age of 15 after successfully skipping two grades.
Upon graduating, he was chosen as a finalist by the Montreal chamber of commerce for the “Outstanding Student” award. Jean Conille was designated as one of “Canada’s future leaders”.
Jean Conille went on to pursue his studies at College Andre Laurendeau in Physics Technology. During this period, his mother died from a chronic illness. He never quite completed the program as he chose to follow in the foot steps of great entrepreneurs such as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.
At age 19, Jean Conille started his first business, a very flourishing telecommunication company, which he named after his mother “Les Entreprises Marie Darbouze”.
Already at age 22, Jean Conille was a self made millionaire.
“Being black, wealthy and young in Montreal in the 80’s or even today is highly irregular” says Jean Conille. “Canada may have grown a lot in the matter of race discrimination, unfortunately the stereotypes still remain. Unless you are an athlete or a known entertainer, driving a luxurious car can only mean you are either a thug or involved in some type of illegal activity”. With a cynical look, Jean Conille adds: “I remember when I was younger, being pulled over more then 17 times with in a week by cops, just because I was driving a new Mercedes.”
Jean Conille talks about his dealings with the bank as being one of the most challenging events in his career. “The banks, back then, would simply not understand why a black teenager would want to open up a business account let alone consider a loan”.
Even following his numerous achievements, he continues to be seen as an outsider to this private club of influential deciders. “They will do business with you, but they want invite you to there weddings or even to there children’s bar mitzvahs”.
By challenging the social injustices we evoke a sense of community that we need to make our nation a better place, just as we make it a safer place.
Jean as recently created a foundation, “The Jean Conille foundation” to reach out to young ethnic entrepreneurs and help them achieve their goals and to educate the population on the contribution made by visible minorities to the Canadian society.
Twenty years later, Jean Conille still gets mistaken for a bouncer at an exclusive supper club he owns. That doesn’t seem to bother him much though. With a smile, Jean Conille gently hands me out his business card where you can clearly read at the bottom: “Some see the world the way it is and ask “why?” But I imagine things that never were and ask “why not?”…

It might just be Britney Spears’ latest hit. Hours after losing visitation rights with her two young sons, the struggling pop star apparently ran over the foot of a photographer for celebrity Web site TMZ.com. Spears was driving away from a Beverly Hills medical building, her car surrounded by photographers, when the incident occurred about 5 p.m. Thursday.
Messages left with her attorney weren’t immediately returned.
Video posted on the Hollywood.TV Web site shows elements of the incident but not the tire rolling over the cameraman’s foot.
The video shows Spears beginning to pull out of the structure when her car is surrounded by more than a dozen photographers. The car comes to a stop.
Spears honks and the car lurches forward a few feet. Shouting is heard, and the camera jerks around as fellow photographers appear to help a man up.
Spears drives off and seconds later video shows what appears to be a tire mark on the photographer’s sock. The man, wearing sandals with white socks, doesn’t respond to questions from the others as he walks away, apparently unhurt.
TMZ supervising producer Gillian Sheldon confirmed Friday that the photographer was employed by the Web site. She said there were no plans to file a police report. In a statement released by TMZ, the photographer indicated he wasn’t angry.
“Things happen at certain times and she was just a little impatient,” said the man, whose name wasn’t released. “She got a little impatient for whatever reason. I say let bygones be bygones.”
On its Web site Friday, TMZ said it was putting the photographer’s sock on e-Bay, and proceeds would go to the Children’s Defense Fund in Spears’ name.
Earlier Thursday, Spears, 25, learned she can no longer visit her two preschool-age sons, who are in the custody of ex-husband Kevin Federline, until she complies with an order from Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon.
Gordon’s ruling didn’t spell out what directives Spears had defied, but a hearing was scheduled for Oct. 26.
Previously, though, Gordon has ordered Spears to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week and to meet weekly with a “parenting coach.”
Spears faces charges of hit and run and driving without a valid license as the result of an Aug. 6 parking lot mishap.
In that incident, paparazzi photographed Spears steering her car into another vehicle as she tried to park in a space in a Studio City lot. The video showed her walking away after assessing the damage to her own car.

Myanmar announced Saturday that it was lifting a curfew and ending a ban on assembly imposed after a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, the latest sign that the government believes it has extinguished the largest demonstrations in decades.
The announcement, made by government vehicles passing through neighborhoods, lifts the curfew that had been imposed at one point from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and ends the ban on gatherings of more than five people in Yangon.
The ruling junta on Saturday also issued an unusual plea in state media for the country’s detained opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to compromise and hold talks with the government.
The apparent softening of the government’s position comes after President Bush’s announcement Friday that new sanctions would be imposed to punish the military-run government and its backers for the deadly crackdown.
The protests were sparked in August when authorities sharply raised fuel prices. With the support of respected monks, they grew to include tens of thousands of people.
The military responded to the growing threat by detaining thousands and shooting into the crowds of demonstrators, killing as many as 10 people. Diplomats and activists say the death toll is much higher.
Authorities in Myanmar have since cleared Yangon’s streets of soldiers and released some prominent activists, although Suu Kyi remains under house arrest. And on Saturday, they announced that a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew would be lifted as well as a ban on gatherings of more than five people in Yangon. It is unclear if the decision also applies to Mandalay.
The government announced earlier this month that the junta’s leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, was willing to meet with Suu Kyi — but only if she meets certain conditions, including renouncing support for foreign sanctions targeting the junta.
The regime accuses Suu Kyi, who has been detained for 12 of the last 18 years, and her party of working with other nations to sabotage the junta’s own plans for a phased return to democracy.
Than Shwe has only met with Suu Kyi once before, in 2002. The talks quickly broke down.
In a lengthy commentary, the newspaper said the time was right for Suu Kyi to respond positively to the offer of talks “with a view to serving the interest of all.”
“We are tired of watching a stalemate for a long time considering that we should not go on like this forever,” the commentary said. “There should be some forms of compromise. If one side makes a concession, the other side should do so. The situation will get worse if both sides are arrogantly intransigent refusing to budge from their stand.”
The views in the state-run New Light of Myanmar commentary are believed to represent those of the junta. The newspaper did not mention the sanctions.
U.N. Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari also met with the junta leader in Myanmar early this month, urging the leaders to bring democracy to the country, as well as twice with Suu Kyi. But he has failed so far to bring about a dialogue between the two sides.
Myanmar’s repressive regime has repeatedly rebuffed the world’s calls for democratic reforms, saying it will follow its own so-called road map to democracy.
The road map is supposed to culminate in a general election at an unspecified future date. But so far only the first stage — drawing up guidelines for a new constitution — has been completed, and that took more than a decade.
